Dowry abuse is an under-recognised form of abuse in Australia.  Dowry abuse represents yet another form of family violence (FV). The practice of dowry refers to the exchange of substantial gifts between families leading up to and after marriage. Abusive behaviors linked to the giving of dowry are not reflective of particular cultural norms surrounding property and marriage but rather of a widespread pattern of violence against women. This presentation refers to the specific practice of dowry in South Asian communities, which involves the transfer of gifts from the bride to the groom’s family.
